Twenty-Third Street Baptist Church

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 7

I believe Twenty-Third Street Baptist Church is the only remaining Protestant Church in the central section of Southside Birmingham. Once there were legion of them, Sixth Avenue Baptist Church was perhaps the most prominent of the African American congregations.

According to its cornerstone the church was organized on January 23, 1902 and the present building was erected twenty-seven years later to designs by L. H. Persley & Company by the builders T. C. Windam & Son.

The building was included on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2016.

More information on the current life of the church is available from its Facebook page.
