Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church (Birmingham Churches and their Cornerstones)

Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is in Birmingham’s East Lake neighborhood and 6931 Division Avenue. It moved here in 1989 from 3001 4th Avenue South in Southside. The East Lake building was formerly Bethel Church of God.

There are three older stones, two from just a few years apart in the 1920s, I don’t know if that reflects two buildings or two stages in the construction of the same building. The stone marking the relocation lists the extensive membership of both the board of stewards and the board of trustees. These stones are prominently placed in the entrance porch to the church on 70th Street. You may not see them driving by, but you will see them when you walk in.
