St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 46

The former home of St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church sits abandoned at 1529 6th Street North in Birmingham, Alabama. It was more recently the home of Perfecting the Saints Ministries. Its two large towers give it a stately presence from its position above the street.

The cornerstone states that it was purchased in 1935. City directories suggest that it was not the building, but the land purchased on that date and that building was erected by the congregation of St. Mark. Much of the church’s neighborhood was destroyed by the construction of Interstate 65.
