Peace Missionary Baptist Church

Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 49

Peace Missionary Baptist Church sits in Birmingham’s Fountain Heights neighborhood at 1193 9th Avenue North. That may sound nice, but that means it is located hard by “Malfunction Junction,” the intersection of Interstate 65 with Interstate 20/59. It was perhaps a good place for a church in 1945 when the simple cinder-block structure was raised, but it is not a popular location now.

The sides and roof of the church are tagged with graffiti associated with gangs, the word on the east side is a Greek word for “love” popular among Christians, At first I thought it was a great photo, but because of its possible criminal association, I have not included that photo here.

According to the cornerstone, the congregation was established on May 21, 1917. Another Baptist church named Peace was located on 6th Street, not too far away.
