Birmingham Churches and Their Cornerstones 56

I’ll put this buidling in the running for Birmingham’s best moderist church building. The competition would include St. George’s Melkite Greek Catholic Church, the (now destroyed) “Blue Roof Church” erected by Pilgrim Congregational Church, and McElwain Baptist Church, now Hope Community Church. The simple cornerstone includes just the year and “A.D.” in the grammatically correct position before the date. Lutherans built some of the best modernist architecture in mid-century, especially the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, to which Trinity belongs. Property records show that the Lutheran church still owns title to the land, but Tabernacle of Praise Church (or T.O.P. Church) appears to be the main congregation using the building. I love the top of the church sign by the street echoes the roof over its porch.
